Is it safe to take metformin and oral contraceptive pills together?

A potential drug interaction is listed between metformin and Zovia.  Oral contraceptives have been reported to decrease the blood glucose lowering effects of antidiabetic medications.  However, this interaction is more common in patients receiving greater than 50 mcg of ethinyl estradiol.  E.g. Zovia 1/35 contains 35 mcg of ethinyl estradiol.  Although an interaction between metformin and Zovia is possible, it is considered low in severity.  It is recommended to closely monitor your blood glucose levels and report any alterations to your physician particularly when first starting or stopping the oral contraceptive.
