Pre-Diabetes
Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with pre-diabetes usually don’t have any symptoms, so the condition can be present for many years without being noticed. If you have pre-diabetes then you are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes however you can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by adopting healthier lifestyle that includes:
- Losing about 5-7% of your body weight if you are overweight
- Doing at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day.
- Following a healthy food plan.
- Early treatment
You can determine if you have pre-diabetes by performing simple tests with your doctor to look at your fasting blood sugar level or an alternative test known as the oral glucose tolerance test or OGTT.
If you discover that you do have prediabetes, remember that it does not mean you will develop type 2, particularly if you follow a treatment plan and make changes to your lifestyle through food choices and physical activity. Even small changes can have a huge impact on delaying or preventing diabetes all together.
